Glycyrrhizic acid, a major active compound in licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra), has a longstanding traditional use in supporting liver health, particularly in Traditional Chinese Medicine. However, there is also scientific evidence supporting its hepatoprotective effects. Multiple in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that glycyrrhizic acid exhibits anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antiviral properties, all of which can be beneficial to the hepatic system. For example, glycyrrhizic acid has been shown to reduce liver inflammation and fibrosis in animal models of hepatitis and cirrhosis. It appears to inhibit hepatic cell apoptosis and modulate immune responses, potentially through suppression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and free radical scavenging.

Clinically, glycyrrhizic acid (often as glycyrrhizin or its derivatives) has been used in Japan as a component of the intravenous drug Stronger Neo-Minophagen C (SNMC) for patients with chronic hepatitis, especially hepatitis C. Some clinical trials report improvements in liver enzymes and histology in hepatitis patients, though evidence is mixed and long-term outcomes are less clear. Adverse effects such as pseudoaldosteronism (leading to hypertension, hypokalemia, and edema) limit its widespread use. Overall, while more robust, high-quality human trials are needed, there is moderate scientific support for glycyrrhizic acid’s role in supporting liver health.
