Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Eriocitrin is a flavonoid glycoside primarily found in lemons and other citrus fruits. Recent scientific studies have investigated its potential benefits for liver (hepatic) health. Several animal studies have demonstrated that eriocitrin exhibits antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which can protect liver cells from oxidative stress and damage induced by toxins such as alcohol or high-fat diets. For example, research published in peer-reviewed journals has shown that supplementation with eriocitrin can reduce markers of liver injury (such as ALT and AST enzymes) and improve histological features in models of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). These effects are thought to be mediated by the compound's ability to increase endogenous antioxidant defenses, such as glutathione, and to modulate inflammatory pathways. However, while these preclinical results are promising, human clinical data are limited. A few small-scale studies suggest positive effects of citrus flavonoid complexes (including eriocitrin) on liver enzyme levels and metabolic parameters, but direct evidence specifically for eriocitrin in humans is still emerging. Therefore, while there is a scientific rationale and some experimental validation for its use in supporting hepatic health, the overall evidence base is moderate and primarily preclinical at this time.
