Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is a major catechin found in green tea and has been widely studied for its potential health benefits, including effects on the hepatic (liver) system. Preclinical studies, including in vitro and animal models, have shown that EGCG possesses hepatoprotective properties. These effects are thought to be due to its strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, which can help reduce oxidative stress and inflammation—common factors in liver injury. Some animal studies have demonstrated that EGCG can attenuate liver damage caused by toxins, high-fat diets, and alcohol by modulating inflammatory pathways and reducing lipid accumulation. Limited clinical studies in humans suggest potential benefits. For example, some trials indicate that EGCG supplementation may decrease liver enzyme levels (such as ALT and AST) in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and may help reduce hepatic fat content. However, these studies are generally small in scale and of short duration, limiting the strength of conclusions that can be drawn. Moreover, there have been rare reports of liver toxicity associated with extremely high doses of green tea extracts, highlighting the need for caution. In summary, while there is a scientific basis for the use of EGCG to support liver health, the current human evidence is moderate and mostly preliminary. More large-scale and long-term clinical trials are needed to confirm its efficacy and safety in supporting hepatic function.
