Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bovine liver extracts are sometimes used in dietary supplements aimed at supporting the hepatic (liver) system. The scientific rationale for their use is based on the concept of "like supports like," wherein consuming organ meats is believed to provide nutrients specific to that organ in the human body. Bovine liver is rich in nutrients such as vitamin B12, folate, iron, and vitamin A, all of which play roles in normal liver function and overall health. However, there is limited direct clinical evidence demonstrating that consumption of bovine liver or its extracts has a targeted therapeutic effect on liver health in humans. Most of the supportive data comes from the nutritional profile of liver, rather than specific intervention trials assessing liver disease or hepatic function improvement. Some animal studies suggest hepatoprotective effects due to antioxidant compounds present in liver tissue, but these findings have not been robustly translated into human clinical practice. Therefore, while there is a nutritional basis for including bovine liver in the diet, the evidence specifically supporting its use for hepatic system support is limited and warrants further research.
