Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Wax gourd (Benincasa hispida), also known as ash gourd or winter melon, has a longstanding place in traditional medicine systems like Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In these traditions, wax gourd is used for its purported cooling, demulcent, and anti-inflammatory properties. Specifically, it is believed to help alleviate symptoms associated with hemorrhoids, such as bleeding, pain, and inflammation. Ayurvedic texts sometimes recommend wax gourd pulp, juice, or preparations for internal and external use, aiming to soothe irritated tissues and reduce swelling. TCM also uses winter melon seeds and fruit to "clear heat" and "relieve toxicity," which are thought to be relevant in managing hemorrhoidal discomfort. However, the evidence supporting these uses is largely anecdotal or based on traditional paradigms rather than modern clinical research. There is a scarcity of well-designed scientific studies directly evaluating the efficacy of wax gourd for hemorrhoids. Most of the available information is based on historical use and herbal compendia rather than randomized controlled trials or pharmacological investigations. Therefore, while the use of wax gourd for hemorrhoids is justified by tradition, the scientific evidence supporting its efficacy is limited, meriting a low evidence rating.
