Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Mezoneuron benthamianum, a plant native to parts of Africa, is primarily used in traditional medicine, including for the management of hemorrhoids. Ethnobotanical surveys and studies from West Africa, particularly Nigeria and Benin, document the use of root, stem bark, or leaf decoctions of this plant for treating piles (hemorrhoids), often as part of polyherbal remedies. Local practitioners attribute anti-inflammatory, astringent, and analgesic properties to the plant, which may theoretically alleviate some symptoms of hemorrhoids such as pain and swelling. However, direct clinical or pharmacological research validating its efficacy for hemorrhoids is lacking. Available scientific studies on Mezoneuron benthamianum focus mostly on its antimicrobial, antioxidant, and general anti-inflammatory properties in vitro or in animal models, not specifically on hemorrhoidal disease. Thus, while traditional usage is well documented in ethnomedicinal literature, scientific evidence supporting its use for hemorrhoids remains very limited, and its safety and efficacy for this particular indication have not been rigorously evaluated in human studies.
