Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Carthamus, commonly known as safflower, has a long history of use in traditional medicines, particularly in Chinese and Middle Eastern herbal practices. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Carthamus tinctorius (Hong Hua) is often used to "invigorate blood," "dispel stasis," and reduce swelling or pain, which are considered relevant to hemorrhoids, especially when there is blood stasis and associated discomfort. Safflower preparations are sometimes included in topical or oral remedies for hemorrhoidal symptoms to promote circulation and relieve swelling and pain.

However, while there is considerable traditional use, robust scientific studies specifically supporting Carthamus for hemorrhoids are lacking. Most of the available research focuses on its effects on blood flow, anti-inflammatory potential, or cardiovascular health, rather than direct clinical trials for hemorrhoidal disease. The traditional rationale is that improved circulation and anti-inflammatory effects can theoretically aid in reducing hemorrhoidal symptoms, but this has not been confirmed in high-quality clinical trials.

In summary, Carthamus's use for hemorrhoids is primarily justified by tradition, with limited supportive scientific evidence and a lack of direct clinical validation.
