Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Cabbage has been used in various traditional medicine systems as a topical or dietary remedy for a range of ailments, including hemorrhoids. Historically, cabbage leaves have been applied to inflamed areas to reduce swelling, and cabbage is valued for its anti-inflammatory and soothing properties in folk medicine. Some traditions, particularly in Eastern Europe and parts of Asia, recommend the consumption of cabbage or application of cabbage leaves as a poultice for hemorrhoids, based on the belief that its phytonutrients and cooling effect can relieve discomfort and promote healing. However, there is very limited scientific research specifically evaluating the efficacy of cabbage for hemorrhoids. While cabbage is rich in fiber and can help promote regular bowel movements—thus indirectly helping to prevent the straining that exacerbates hemorrhoids—there are no robust clinical studies directly supporting the use of cabbage (either topically or orally) as a primary treatment for hemorrhoids. The majority of recommendations come from anecdotal reports and historical use, not from well-designed scientific investigations. Therefore, while cabbage may offer some supportive benefits as part of a fiber-rich diet, its specific use as a treatment for hemorrhoids remains primarily rooted in tradition with minimal scientific backing.
