Belleric myrobalan (Terminalia bellirica), also known as "Bibhitaki," is a fruit commonly used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine. Its use in the treatment and support of hemorrhoids is primarily based on traditional practices rather than robust scientific evidence. In Ayurveda, Belleric myrobalan is considered to have astringent, laxative, and anti-inflammatory properties. These attributes are thought to help relieve constipation—a common contributing factor to hemorrhoids—and reduce inflammation and swelling in the anal region. It is often included as a component of the herbal formulation Triphala, which is frequently recommended for digestive health and bowel regulation in Ayurveda. However, modern scientific studies directly evaluating the efficacy of Belleric myrobalan for hemorrhoids are lacking. Most references to its use for this condition are found in classical Ayurvedic texts and practitioner recommendations, not in peer-reviewed clinical trials. While some in vitro and animal studies suggest anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of Belleric myrobalan, these findings do not specifically address hemorrhoids in humans. Therefore, the evidence supporting its use is primarily traditional, and scientific validation remains limited.
