Evidence supporting the use of: Vitamin D (unspecified)
For the health condition: Heart (weakness)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Vitamin D has been investigated in relation to cardiovascular health, including its potential role in supporting or treating heart "weakness," which can refer to conditions like heart failure or reduced cardiac function. Observational studies have consistently shown that low serum vitamin D levels are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, including heart failure. Vitamin D receptors are present in cardiac tissue, and vitamin D is involved in modulating inflammation, the renin-angiotensin system, and calcium homeostasis, all of which are relevant to heart function.
However, randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have yielded mixed results. Some small studies suggest that vitamin D supplementation may improve cardiac function in patients with deficiency, but large-scale meta-analyses and RCTs generally have not demonstrated a clear benefit for preventing or treating heart failure in the general population. For example, the VITAL trial (2019) found no significant reduction in major cardiovascular events with vitamin D supplementation in people without severe deficiency. The evidence is stronger for correcting vitamin D deficiency in those who have both low levels and heart failure, but not for using vitamin D as a general treatment for heart weakness.
In summary, while there is a plausible biological basis and some observational and small interventional studies suggest potential benefit, the overall clinical trial evidence is moderate and does not strongly support vitamin D supplementation for heart weakness in people without deficiency. The use for this purpose is thus partially scientifically justified, with moderate evidence (rated 3/5).
