Evidence supporting the use of: Ribose
For the health condition: Heart (weakness)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
D-Ribose is a naturally occurring sugar that plays a key role in the synthesis of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which is the primary energy carrier in cells, including those in the heart. Scientific interest in ribose supplementation for heart health, particularly in conditions involving "heart weakness" such as congestive heart failure (CHF), arises from its potential to improve cardiac energy metabolism. Some small, preliminary clinical studies have explored ribose supplementation in patients with heart disease. For example, a few randomized controlled trials have suggested that ribose can improve exercise tolerance and diastolic function in individuals with CHF or ischemic heart disease, possibly by replenishing depleted ATP stores in cardiac tissue. However, these studies are generally limited by small sample sizes, short durations, and methodological weaknesses. The overall quality of evidence is low to moderate, and major clinical guidelines do not currently recommend ribose for heart failure or related conditions. Larger, well-designed trials are needed to confirm its efficacy and safety. In summary, while there is some scientific rationale and limited clinical evidence supporting ribose's use for heart weakness, the evidence base is not strong enough to warrant routine use.
