Evidence supporting the use of: Panax Notoginseng
For the health condition: Heart (weakness)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3
Panax notoginseng (also known as Sanqi or Tienchi ginseng) has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for supporting cardiovascular health and treating conditions associated with "heart weakness," such as palpitations, angina, and recovery after heart-related illnesses. In TCM, Panax notoginseng is believed to "invigorate the blood," "dispel blood stasis," and support the heart's energy (qi), which is considered important for maintaining a healthy cardiovascular system. Historical texts and modern TCM practice reference its ability to stop bleeding, reduce swelling, and improve circulation, which are linked in TCM theory to both heart and vascular function.
Scientific research on Panax notoginseng in the context of cardiovascular health is emerging. Some laboratory and animal studies suggest that its active compounds, such as notoginsenosides, may exhibit anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-platelet aggregation effects. Limited clinical studies have investigated its use in humans, with some suggesting potential benefits for blood pressure, lipid profiles, or angina symptoms. However, high-quality, large-scale clinical trials are lacking, and most of the evidence comes from preclinical research or small clinical studies, often conducted in China. Therefore, while traditional use is strong and there is some preliminary scientific support, the overall evidence is moderate and not definitive.
