Rating (out of 5): 1

Nymphaea nouchali (commonly known as blue lotus or star lotus) is traditionally used in some South Asian and Ayurvedic medicinal systems as a remedy for various ailments, including those related to the heart, such as "heart weakness" or general cardiovascular debility. Traditional texts, such as the Ayurvedic compendium, reference its use for supporting heart health, often describing it as "hridya" (beneficial for the heart). However, these uses are primarily rooted in historical practice and theoretical frameworks rather than modern clinical evidence.

There is a paucity of scientific studies specifically investigating the cardioprotective or heart-strengthening effects of Nymphaea nouchali in humans. While the plant does contain various bioactive compounds (such as flavonoids and alkaloids) with general antioxidant properties, there is limited direct evidence demonstrating efficacy in treating or alleviating conditions like heart weakness. Most available studies focus on other pharmacological properties (antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial) or are preliminary, in vitro, or animal-based. Therefore, the traditional use for heart weakness is not currently substantiated by robust scientific research, and evidence remains low.
