Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ligustilide is a phthalide compound found primarily in the roots of Angelica sinensis (Dong Quai) and Ligusticum chuanxiong, both of which are important herbs in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Its use for supporting or treating "heart weakness" is primarily rooted in traditional practices rather than robust scientific evidence. In TCM, these herbs are believed to "invigorate the blood" and "promote circulation," which are thought to benefit cardiovascular health and address symptoms interpreted as "heart weakness" (such as fatigue, palpitations, or general debility). Historical texts and pharmacopeias describe their use in formulas intended for cardiovascular support, often for conditions like angina, irregular heartbeat, or recovery from illness.

However, scientific studies specifically examining ligustilide for "heart weakness" are limited. Some preclinical research indicates potential vasodilatory and cardioprotective effects of ligustilide, such as improving blood flow and protecting cardiac cells from oxidative damage. These findings are preliminary, mostly from animal or in vitro studies, and do not directly translate to clinical efficacy in humans for heart failure or related conditions. As a result, while there is a strong tradition behind its use for cardiovascular support, scientific validation remains insufficient, so the evidence level is rated at 2.
