Kokilaksha (Asteracantha longifolia, also known as Hygrophila auriculata) is an herb commonly cited in Ayurvedic and traditional Unani medicine for various health conditions, including as a "cardiotonic" or for heart weakness. The traditional use of Kokilaksha for supporting heart health is documented in classical Ayurvedic texts, where it is described as "Hridya" (good for the heart) and is included in formulations intended to improve overall vitality and address "weakness" of organs, including the heart. The herb is believed to have strengthening and rejuvenating properties, often attributed to its rasayana (tonic) effects. However, the scientific evidence to validate these traditional claims is limited. Some animal studies have explored the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of Asteracantha longifolia, which could theoretically be beneficial for cardiovascular health, but direct studies on heart function or heart weakness in humans are lacking. No large-scale clinical trials have substantiated its efficacy for cardiac conditions. Therefore, while the use of Kokilaksha for heart weakness is rooted in tradition and historical practice, the scientific support remains preliminary and indirect.
