Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Indian Coraltree (Erythrina variegata) has been used in traditional Indian (Ayurvedic) and Southeast Asian medicinal systems for various ailments, including as a remedy for heart weakness or cardiovascular complaints. In Ayurveda, the bark and leaves of the tree are sometimes cited as "hridya" (beneficial for the heart) and are included in formulations intended to support cardiac function, often in combination with other herbs. However, most references to its use for the heart are generalized and not specific to "heart weakness" as defined in modern medicine, and are based on historical practice rather than detailed clinical observation.

Scientifically, there are only a few preliminary studies (mostly in vitro or animal models) that examine the cardiovascular effects of Erythrina variegata extracts, such as mild hypotensive or antiarrhythmic activity. These studies are limited in scope, often use crude extracts, and lack robust clinical validation in humans. No high-quality clinical trials have established its efficacy or safety for treating heart weakness or other cardiac conditions. Thus, its use for this purpose is primarily rooted in traditional knowledge, and the scientific evidence supporting its cardiovascular benefits remains weak and inconclusive.
