Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Flavanones are a subclass of flavonoids, naturally occurring compounds found in citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons, and grapefruits. They have garnered scientific interest for their potential cardiovascular benefits. Several epidemiological and experimental studies have suggested that flavanones, particularly hesperidin and naringenin, can exert protective effects on the heart and vascular system. These compounds have demonstrated antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and vasodilatory properties, which may contribute to improved endothelial function and reduced blood pressure. Some randomized controlled trials have shown that supplementation with citrus flavanones can modestly improve markers of vascular health, such as arterial stiffness and endothelial function, especially in populations at risk for cardiovascular disease. However, while the evidence points toward a beneficial role in supporting heart health, the effects are generally mild and should be considered complementary to established therapies and lifestyle modifications. The current level of scientific evidence is moderate (rated 3 out of 5), with promising data from both in vitro and human studies, but more large-scale, long-term clinical trials are needed to confirm their efficacy and to establish guidelines for their use in preventing or treating heart weakness or cardiovascular disease.
