Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Cod liver oil has been traditionally used for various health purposes, but its use for supporting heart health has gained scientific interest due to its content of omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA), vitamin A, and vitamin D. Several clinical studies and reviews have examined the effects of omega-3 fatty acids on cardiovascular health. Omega-3s are known to help lower triglycerides, reduce blood pressure, and may have anti-inflammatory and antiarrhythmic effects, all of which are beneficial for heart health. Cod liver oil, as a rich source of these fatty acids, is therefore sometimes recommended as a supplement for heart support.

However, while there is good evidence that omega-3 fatty acids in general can benefit certain cardiovascular risk factors, the evidence specifically for cod liver oil (as distinct from fish oil or purified EPA/DHA supplements) is less robust. Some small studies and observational data suggest potential benefits, but large-scale, high-quality randomized controlled trials specifically investigating cod liver oil for heart disease prevention or treatment are lacking. Additionally, cod liver oil contains high amounts of vitamin A, which can be toxic in excess and may counterbalance some of its benefits if taken in large doses.

In summary, the use of cod liver oil for heart health has some scientific backing due to its omega-3 content, but the evidence is moderate (rated 3/5) and largely extrapolated from research on omega-3s in general, not cod liver oil specifically. Caution is advised due to vitamin A toxicity risks with high intake.
