Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Brandy has historically been used as a remedy for "heart weakness" or as a cardiac stimulant, especially in the 18th and 19th centuries. Medical practitioners in these eras sometimes recommended small amounts of brandy to patients suffering from faintness, shock, or what was then termed "heart failure," believing that the alcohol content could temporarily stimulate the cardiovascular system and raise blood pressure. The perceived benefit was due to alcohol’s vasodilatory effects and its capacity to provide a quick source of energy. However, these practices were based more on anecdotal experience and medical tradition than on rigorous scientific evidence. Modern medicine does not support the use of brandy or other forms of alcohol for treating heart weakness; in fact, excessive alcohol intake is known to harm the heart. While moderate alcohol consumption has been associated with certain cardiovascular benefits in some epidemiological studies, these findings do not validate the use of brandy specifically as a treatment for heart weakness. Today, the use of brandy in this context is considered outdated and unsupported by current clinical research.
