Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Borassus palm (Borassus flabellifer), also known as palmyra palm, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems across South and Southeast Asia. In some folk medicine traditions, various parts of the Borassus palm—such as the fruit, sap, and roots—are used for general vitality, as a cooling agent, and occasionally for heart "weakness" or to promote cardiovascular health. However, these uses are based primarily on traditional beliefs and anecdotal reports rather than rigorous scientific studies. There is very limited scientific research directly investigating the effects of Borassus palm on heart function or cardiovascular conditions. Few phytochemical studies have identified antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds in Borassus, but these findings have not been linked specifically to heart health in clinical settings. Therefore, while the use of Borassus palm for heart "weakness" is justified by traditional medicine practices, there is a lack of quality scientific evidence to substantiate its efficacy or safety for this purpose. As such, its use should be approached with caution, and not as a substitute for evidence-based treatments.
