Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Antler horn, commonly referred to as "Lu Rong" in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has been used historically to tonify the kidney, strengthen yang, and invigorate essence and blood. TCM texts sometimes extend these effects to support general vitality and address symptoms that may include palpitations or other manifestations of "heart weakness," generally interpreted as fatigue, poor circulation, or weakness rather than heart disease in the Western medical sense. There is, however, no robust scientific evidence supporting the use of antler horn for treating or supporting heart function or heart weakness as defined in modern medicine. A few animal studies have indicated possible cardiovascular benefits, such as improved blood flow or anti-inflammatory effects, but these findings are preliminary and not directly linked to heart weakness or failure. Most of the rationale for its use in this context comes from centuries-old TCM doctrine and case reports rather than rigorous clinical trials. As such, its use for heart weakness is justified primarily by traditional beliefs, and the quality of evidence is low.
