Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Albizia species, particularly Albizia julibrissin (Mimosa tree or Silk tree), have a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda. In TCM, Albizia is known as "He Huan Pi" or "He Huan Hua" and is primarily used as a calming agent for the mind ("Shen"), rather than directly for heart weakness as understood in a biomedical sense. However, traditional concepts sometimes link emotional disturbances and heart function, with the heart believed to house the mind. Albizia is thus traditionally used to "nourish the heart" and promote emotional well-being, ease anxiety, and treat insomnia. There are few, if any, direct references in traditional texts to its use for treating physical heart weakness or cardiovascular disease.
From a scientific standpoint, there is limited research on Albizia's effects on the cardiovascular system. Some animal and in vitro studies suggest mild antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, which could be theoretically beneficial to heart health, but these findings are preliminary, and no clinical trials support Albizia for treating heart weakness or cardiac insufficiency in humans. Therefore, current use for "heart weakness" is justified by tradition, primarily in the context of emotional or psychological support rather than direct cardiac function, and the evidence supporting its efficacy for this indication is weak.
