Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca) has a long history of traditional use in supporting heart health, particularly for symptoms like palpitations and mild arrhythmias such as heart fibrillation. The herb was widely used in European folk medicine and by herbalists to address “fluttering” sensations in the chest and anxiety-related heart symptoms, often referred to as “nervous heart.” The name itself reflects its use for both women’s reproductive issues and heart complaints. Motherwort contains alkaloids (like leonurine), iridoids, and flavonoids, some of which may have mild sedative and antispasmodic effects, potentially calming both the heart and the nervous system.

However, while there is traditional and anecdotal support for its use, the scientific evidence is limited. Only a handful of small or preliminary animal studies suggest mild antiarrhythmic or cardiotonic properties. Human clinical trials directly assessing motherwort’s effect on atrial fibrillation or palpitations are virtually nonexistent. Most modern herbalists use it for palpitations related to anxiety or stress, rather than for life-threatening arrhythmias. Thus, while motherwort has a strong traditional reputation for supporting benign palpitations, its efficacy and safety for serious heart rhythm disorders are not scientifically validated. People with diagnosed heart conditions should consult a physician before using motherwort.
