Evidence supporting the use of: Polydatin
For the body system: Heart
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Polydatin, also known as piceid, is a natural precursor and glycoside form of resveratrol, found in the root of Polygonum cuspidatum and other plants. Scientific studies have investigated polydatin for its potential cardioprotective effects. Preclinical research indicates that polydatin exhibits antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic properties, which may contribute to cardiovascular protection. Animal and in vitro studies suggest that polydatin can reduce myocardial infarct size, improve cardiac function after ischemia-reperfusion injury, and help regulate lipid metabolism, potentially lowering cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Additionally, polydatin has demonstrated the ability to inhibit platelet aggregation and improve endothelial function, both of which are important for cardiovascular health.
However, while these findings are promising, the bulk of evidence comes from laboratory and animal studies rather than large-scale human clinical trials. There is a lack of robust, high-quality human data confirming its efficacy or safety for heart support. Polydatin is not widely recognized in traditional medicine for heart health, and its use is largely based on contemporary pharmacological research. Thus, while there is a scientific rationale and preliminary evidence supporting polydatin’s use for cardiovascular health, further clinical research is needed to fully validate its role in supporting the heart body system.
