Evidence supporting the use of: Capsicum
For the body system: Heart
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Capsicum, commonly known as chili pepper, has been traditionally used in various cultures for its medicinal properties, including cardiovascular support. Scientifically, the primary active compound in capsicum is capsaicin. Several studies have suggested that capsaicin may have beneficial effects on the heart and circulatory system. Research indicates that capsaicin can promote vasodilation (widening of blood vessels), which may help lower blood pressure. Additionally, some studies in both animals and humans have shown that capsaicin may help reduce cholesterol levels and improve overall blood lipid profiles. Capsaicin is also known to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which can be beneficial for cardiovascular health.
However, while these effects are promising, most of the evidence comes from preclinical (animal and in vitro) studies and small-scale human trials. There is not yet robust, large-scale clinical evidence to firmly establish capsicum or capsaicin as a standard treatment or preventive measure for heart disease. The use of capsicum for heart health is therefore supported by some scientific evidence, but it is not conclusive. Capsicum continues to be investigated for its potential cardiovascular benefits, but current recommendations are cautious and emphasize that it should not replace established medical therapies for heart disease.
