Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ginkgo flavonglycosides, derived from the leaves of Ginkgo biloba, have been investigated for their potential to support or treat hearing loss, particularly sensorineural hearing loss and tinnitus. The rationale for their use is based on Ginkgo’s vasodilatory and antioxidant properties, which could theoretically improve blood flow to the cochlea and reduce oxidative damage implicated in hearing loss. Several small randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have evaluated Ginkgo biloba extracts for hearing-related conditions, most notably tinnitus, which often co-occurs with hearing impairment. These studies show mixed results: some report modest improvements in subjective hearing function or tinnitus severity, while others find no significant benefit compared to placebo. Notably, the quality of evidence is generally low, with methodological limitations such as small sample sizes, short durations, and inconsistent outcome measures. Major clinical guidelines do not currently recommend Ginkgo biloba for hearing loss due to insufficient and inconsistent evidence. In summary, while there is some scientific investigation into Ginkgo flavonglycosides for hearing loss, the evidence supporting its efficacy is limited and not robust. Its use for this indication is not purely traditional, but neither is it strongly validated by science at this time.
