Triphala, a traditional Ayurvedic herbal formulation composed of three fruits—Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), Bibhitaki (Terminalia bellirica), and Haritaki (Terminalia chebula)—has been used for centuries in Indian medicine for a variety of health conditions. In the context of headaches, particularly tension-type headaches, there are references in Ayurvedic texts suggesting its use, though not as a primary or specific remedy. Traditionally, Triphala is believed to balance the doshas (bodily energies), improve digestion, and detoxify the body. Since headaches in Ayurveda are sometimes attributed to digestive disturbances or accumulation of toxins ("ama"), Triphala may be recommended to support digestive health and, indirectly, headache relief. However, there is a lack of robust clinical research specifically evaluating Triphala for headache management. The available scientific literature focuses more on its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and adaptogenic properties, which could theoretically provide some benefit for tension headaches by reducing oxidative stress and promoting overall well-being. Despite this, its use for headaches remains primarily based on traditional practice rather than direct scientific validation. Clinical trials directly assessing its efficacy for tension headaches are lacking, and any benefit is inferred rather than proven.
