Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Stereospermum suaveolens, commonly known as "Patala," is a plant traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine. Its use for headache, particularly tension-type headache, is primarily rooted in traditional practices rather than modern scientific research. In Ayurveda, Stereospermum is sometimes included in formulations (such as Dashamoola) indicated for balancing doshas that can manifest with headache symptoms. However, there is little to no direct scientific evidence or clinical research specifically demonstrating the efficacy of Stereospermum for treating or relieving tension headaches. The traditional application is mostly based on its reputed anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, as well as its general use in treating vata-related disorders, which may include headaches. The available studies mostly focus on its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic effects in animal models, but they do not explicitly correlate these findings with headache relief in humans. Therefore, while its use for headache can be traced to traditional systems of medicine, the evidence supporting this application is limited and largely anecdotal.
