Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Pluchea, particularly Pluchea indica and Pluchea odorata, has a history of traditional use in folk medicine for treating headaches, especially tension-type headaches. Ethnobotanical records from various cultures, including in South and Southeast Asia as well as Central America, indicate that Pluchea leaves or extracts have been used as poultices or infusions to alleviate headache and related symptoms. The rationale in traditional systems is often based on Pluchea’s reputed anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, which are thought to help relieve the muscle tension and discomfort associated with tension headaches. Some laboratory studies have identified the presence of bioactive compounds in Pluchea species, such as flavonoids and sesquiterpene lactones, which may exert anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects. However, there are no robust clinical trials directly evaluating Pluchea’s effectiveness for treating tension headaches in humans. The available evidence supporting its use is largely anecdotal or based on traditional practices rather than scientific validation. Therefore, while the use of Pluchea for headache relief is justified by tradition and some preliminary pharmacological findings, rigorous scientific evidence is lacking, and the strength of recommendation remains low.
