Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Morus, commonly known as mulberry, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in East Asia. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), various parts of the mulberry plant—including the leaves, fruit, and bark—have been used to address a range of ailments. For headaches, especially those characterized as "wind-heat" or associated with tension, mulberry leaves (Morus alba) are sometimes included in herbal formulations intended to "clear heat" and "calm the spirit." However, the traditional use of Morus for treating tension headaches is not a dominant or widely recognized application; rather, its use is often secondary or as part of multi-herb combinations. There is minimal direct clinical research validating the effectiveness of Morus in treating tension headaches specifically. Most contemporary studies on Morus focus on its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective properties, which could theoretically provide some benefit for headaches, but direct evidence is lacking. Thus, while there is some traditional precedent for its use in headache or tension-related symptoms, this is not well substantiated by scientific research, and the traditional evidence is relatively weak and indirect. As such, Morus should not be considered a primary or robust treatment for tension headaches based on current knowledge.
