Evidence supporting the use of: Ledebouriella
For the health condition: Headache (tension)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Ledebouriella, commonly referred to as Ledebouriella divaricata or by its traditional Chinese medicine name, Fang Feng, has a long history of use in East Asian herbal medicine. Traditionally, it is valued for its ability to "expel wind" and is frequently included in prescriptions for conditions associated with wind, such as headaches (especially those attributed to external wind invasion or tension-type headaches), body aches, and upper respiratory symptoms. Texts such as the Shennong Bencao Jing and the Compendium of Materia Medica describe its use for alleviating headaches, particularly those accompanied by stiffness or pain in the neck and upper back.
However, the scientific evidence supporting Ledebouriella for tension-type headaches is sparse. While some laboratory studies have identified anti-inflammatory and analgesic components in Ledebouriella root extracts, there have been no high-quality clinical trials directly evaluating its efficacy for headache relief in humans. As a result, its use for headaches is justified mainly by traditional practice rather than modern scientific validation. The evidence rating of 2 reflects the predominance of historical and anecdotal use, with only limited pharmacological data and an absence of robust clinical research.
