Borassus palm (Borassus flabellifer), also known as the palmyra palm, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems across South and Southeast Asia. In Ayurvedic and Siddha medicine, various parts of the Borassus palm—including its sap, fruit, and roots—are used to address a range of ailments, including headaches. Specifically, traditional texts and ethnobotanical surveys sometimes mention the application of Borassus palm leaf or root extracts as a remedy for headache, particularly tension-type headaches, often through topical application or consumption of decoctions. The rationale is typically based on the plant’s purported cooling and anti-inflammatory properties, which are believed to ease discomfort and tension. However, scientific validation of these uses is minimal. There are no high-quality clinical studies or pharmacological investigations directly supporting the efficacy of Borassus palm for tension headaches. Most available research focuses on its nutritional value, antioxidant properties, and general traditional medicinal applications rather than specific headache treatment. As such, while the use of Borassus palm for headaches is rooted in tradition, the supporting evidence remains largely anecdotal and not rigorously studied in scientific literature.
