Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Bay leaf (Laurus nobilis) has a long history of use in traditional medicine, including in Mediterranean and South Asian cultures. Historically, bay leaves have been used for a variety of ailments, including headaches, particularly tension-type headaches. The traditional use is based on the belief that bay leaf contains volatile oils (such as eugenol) with mild analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. Some folk remedies involved making a tea or decoction from bay leaves, which was then consumed or used as a compress for headache relief.

However, scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of bay leaf specifically for tension headaches is scant. There are no robust clinical trials or pharmacological studies directly investigating bay leaf’s impact on headache relief. Most available information is anecdotal or comes from general knowledge about the plant’s mild anti-inflammatory effects. As a result, while its use for headache has roots in traditional practice, modern scientific validation for this specific application is lacking.
