Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Avens (Geum urbanum), also known as herb Bennet, has a long history of use in traditional European herbal medicine. It has been employed for a variety of ailments, including digestive complaints, fevers, and occasionally headaches. The use of Avens specifically for tension headaches is based on historical herbalist texts and folk medicine, where it was sometimes brewed as a tea or used in herbal mixtures intended to "calm the nerves" or relieve general head discomfort. However, the evidence supporting its efficacy is almost entirely anecdotal and based on traditional usage rather than scientific studies.

There is a lack of clinical trials or pharmacological research directly evaluating Avens for any type of headache, including tension headaches. The herb contains tannins and eugenol, which are thought to have mild astringent and potentially soothing properties, but there is no scientific validation for its use in headache management. Therefore, while Avens has some history of traditional use for symptoms that may include headaches, the overall evidence is weak, and modern herbal medicine does not commonly recommend it for this purpose.
