Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Scallion (Allium fistulosum), also known as green onion, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in East Asia. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), scallion is often used as part of herbal formulas to treat external wind-cold conditions, which can include symptoms such as headache, nasal congestion, and sinus discomfort. The warming and pungent properties of scallion are believed to help "dispel wind" and "open the nasal passages," making it a common ingredient in remedies for sinus-related headaches, especially those associated with the early stages of the common cold. However, scientific validation for these uses is limited. While scallions contain compounds such as organosulfur compounds and flavonoids, which have mild anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects, there are no robust clinical studies directly demonstrating efficacy for sinus headache relief. Most evidence remains anecdotal or rooted in traditional practice rather than modern pharmacological research. Therefore, while scallion is traditionally used for this purpose, the strength of evidence supporting its use for sinus headache is modest.
