Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Dianthus, commonly known as "pinks" or "carnation," has a history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly within Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In TCM, Dianthus superbus (Qu Mai) is included in formulations intended to clear heat, promote urination, and reduce inflammation. Some traditional sources mention its use in addressing various inflammatory conditions, which could theoretically include sinus-related headaches due to sinus congestion or infection. However, direct references to Dianthus specifically for "headache (sinus)" are very limited in both TCM and Western herbal traditions. There is no substantial clinical or pharmacological research demonstrating efficacy for this specific indication, and the rationale for its use is based mainly on its broader anti-inflammatory and diuretic properties as described in ancient texts. Thus, while there is some traditional precedent for using Dianthus in conditions involving head discomfort or sinus inflammation, the evidence is weak and largely anecdotal. No modern studies specifically support its use for sinus headaches.
