Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Carry Me Seed (also known as Xanthium strumarium, cocklebur, or by other names in traditional medicine systems) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and other herbal traditions for the treatment of sinus headaches and related nasal congestion. In TCM, the seeds (called Cang Er Zi) are a key ingredient in formulas designed to "dispel wind" and open nasal passages, purportedly providing relief from sinus-related headaches, nasal obstruction, and rhinitis. The use is largely based on centuries-old empirical practice rather than robust clinical evidence. While some animal studies suggest mild anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of Xanthium strumarium extracts, high-quality human trials are lacking, and safety concerns have been raised due to the plant’s potential toxicity. No major clinical guidelines endorse its use for sinus headaches, and modern pharmacological support remains limited. Therefore, its use for sinus headache is primarily justified by traditional knowledge rather than scientific validation.
