Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

White pear (Pyrus spp.) has been traditionally consumed in East Asian countries, but recent scientific studies have begun to investigate its efficacy in alleviating hangover symptoms. A notable study published in 2015 in the journal Food & Function examined the effects of Korean pear (Pyrus pyrifolia) juice on alcohol metabolism and hangover severity. The randomized controlled trial found that consumption of pear juice prior to alcohol intake significantly reduced blood alcohol levels and improved some hangover symptoms, such as trouble with concentration. The proposed mechanisms include enhanced activity of enzymes involved in alcohol metabolism, such as alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH). However, the body of scientific literature remains limited, with most data coming from a small number of human trials and in vitro studies. Furthermore, the evidence primarily points to a mild reduction in certain hangover symptoms, rather than a comprehensive cure. As such, while there is some scientific support for the hangover-relieving properties of White pear, the overall evidence base is modest in both quantity and quality, warranting a rating of 2 out of 5.
