Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Schisandra (Schisandra chinensis) has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and other East Asian medical systems, where it is valued as an adaptogen and a tonic herb. It is traditionally believed to support liver health, increase vitality, and counteract the effects of fatigue and intoxication. In the context of hangovers, Schisandra's use is primarily rooted in this traditional framework. The rationale is that Schisandra can help the body process and recover from the effects of alcohol, largely due to its perceived liver-protective and detoxifying properties.
Scientific research does show that Schisandra contains lignans (such as schisandrin) that have hepatoprotective effects in laboratory and animal studies, promoting liver cell regeneration and enhancing detoxification enzymes. However, direct clinical studies demonstrating efficacy for hangover treatment or prevention are lacking. Most of the available evidence is either preclinical or based on traditional use, not on rigorous human clinical trials. Thus, while there is some biological plausibility for liver support, the specific use of Schisandra for treating or preventing hangovers remains primarily traditional, with limited scientific backing.
