Evidence supporting the use of: Luo Han Guo
For the health condition: Hangover
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Luo Han Guo (Siraitia grosvenorii), also known as monk fruit, is traditionally used in Chinese medicine for its cooling properties, to relieve cough, and to support throat health. There is some historical precedent for using Luo Han Guo as part of herbal mixtures for general detoxification and to alleviate symptoms associated with overindulgence, which may include hangover-like symptoms (headache, thirst, heat). However, these uses are anecdotal and not specific or prevalent in classical texts compared to other herbs like kudzu root (Pueraria lobata).
Scientifically, there is no robust evidence or published clinical studies supporting Luo Han Guo’s efficacy for treating or preventing hangovers. Its primary active components, mogrosides, are noted mainly for their intense sweetness and antioxidant properties. While antioxidants can potentially protect against some alcohol-induced oxidative stress, there is no direct research linking Luo Han Guo with amelioration of hangover symptoms such as dehydration, headache, or nausea.
In summary, although there is some traditional use of Luo Han Guo for general “detoxification” or “cooling” after overindulgence, neither historical nor scientific evidence provides strong support for its use specifically for hangover treatment. Its application for this purpose is minor and not well established.
