Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Indian Gooseberry (Emblica officinalis or Amla) has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic medicine, where it is regarded as a general rejuvenative and is believed to support liver health and detoxification. In the context of hangovers, Amla is sometimes recommended in traditional Indian remedies, primarily due to its high vitamin C content and its supposed ability to combat oxidative stress and promote liver function. However, direct scientific studies specifically examining Amla’s effects on hangover symptoms (such as headache, nausea, or dehydration) are lacking. Some laboratory and animal studies suggest that Amla can have hepatoprotective effects and may reduce markers of liver damage from toxins, including alcohol, but these findings are preliminary and not directly linked to human hangover relief. There are no well-controlled clinical trials in humans confirming its efficacy for treating or preventing hangover symptoms. Thus, while its use is supported by tradition and some indirect scientific rationale, robust clinical evidence is minimal.
