Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Ginseng, particularly varieties like Panax ginseng and Panax quinquefolius, has a long history in traditional medicine systems such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Korean traditional medicine. Its use to support recovery from alcohol overconsumption or to alleviate hangover symptoms is rooted primarily in this traditional context. Ginseng is believed to restore “qi” (vital energy), reduce fatigue, and improve overall resilience, which may indirectly help with some symptoms associated with hangovers, such as tiredness or malaise.
Scientific evaluation of ginseng’s effects on hangover symptoms is limited, though a few studies have explored its potential to modulate alcohol metabolism. Some animal and small human studies suggest that certain compounds in ginseng, such as ginsenosides, may influence enzymes involved in alcohol breakdown, potentially reducing blood alcohol levels or accelerating clearance. However, these findings are preliminary, and larger, well-controlled clinical trials are lacking. There is insufficient scientific evidence to conclusively support the use of ginseng for hangover treatment. Thus, while ginseng is used for this purpose in traditional contexts, and there is some emerging but inconclusive scientific interest, its use for hangover relief remains primarily tradition-based.
