Evidence supporting the use of: Cola
For the health condition: Hangover
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Cola, particularly in the form of commercial soft drinks like Coca-Cola or Pepsi, is sometimes used as a home remedy for hangover symptoms. The primary justification for this use is traditional or anecdotal rather than based on rigorous scientific evidence. Historically, people have turned to cola drinks for hangovers due to their perceived ability to soothe the stomach, provide sugar for energy, and offer caffeine, which may help counteract fatigue and headaches associated with hangovers. However, scientific studies directly evaluating cola as a hangover remedy are lacking. The ingredients in cola—caffeine, sugar, and carbonation—each have minor roles in alleviating individual symptoms (such as tiredness or mild nausea), but there is no evidence that they address the underlying causes of a hangover, such as dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, or the toxic effects of alcohol metabolites. Thus, while the use of cola for hangover relief is rooted in tradition and popular use, its efficacy is not well supported by scientific research.
