Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Cactus, particularly the prickly pear cactus (Opuntia ficus-indica), has been traditionally used in some cultures, especially in Mexico, as a remedy for hangover symptoms. Historical uses include consuming cactus pads or extracts to alleviate headaches, nausea, and dry mouth associated with excessive alcohol consumption. The rationale is thought to be related to the plant's antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which might counteract some of the physiological stress caused by alcohol intake.

Scientific research on cactus for hangover is limited but not entirely absent. A notable randomized controlled trial published in 2004 in the journal Archives of Internal Medicine (Wiese et al.) found that an extract of prickly pear cactus modestly reduced some symptoms of hangover, specifically nausea, dry mouth, and loss of appetite. The study suggested that the benefit may be due to reduced inflammation, as some biomarkers of inflammation were decreased in the treatment group. However, the effect was not strong for all symptoms, and more research is needed to confirm these findings and to clarify which species and preparations are effective.

Overall, while there is some preliminary scientific support, the primary justification for using cactus for hangover comes from traditional use, and the scientific evidence remains limited. The evidence rating is 2 out of 5 due to a small number of studies and modest effects observed.
