Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Orris root (derived from the rhizomes of Iris germanica or Iris florentina) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, including as a remedy for halitosis (bad breath). Orris root was commonly used in the past as an ingredient in tooth powders and breath fresheners, largely due to its pleasant, violet-like fragrance rather than any inherent antimicrobial or deodorizing properties. Historical texts and herbal formularies from the 18th and 19th centuries often mention orris root in the context of improving oral hygiene and masking unpleasant odors. However, there is little to no scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness in treating the underlying causes of halitosis, such as bacterial overgrowth or oral disease. Modern research has not confirmed any significant antibacterial activity relevant to oral pathogens, and orris is rarely used in contemporary dental care. Thus, its use for halitosis is primarily justified by tradition, with only weak evidence (rated 1) based on historical practices rather than validated clinical studies.
