Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Proprietary blends of amino acids and proteins are commonly marketed in supplements aimed at improving hair health, including addressing hair loss or thinning. Scientifically, hair is primarily composed of keratin, a protein that is synthesized from amino acids. Certain amino acids, such as cysteine, methionine, lysine, and arginine, play important roles in the structure and growth of hair. There is limited evidence from small clinical studies and laboratory research suggesting that supplementation with specific amino acids may improve hair quality or support hair growth, particularly in individuals with dietary deficiencies or certain medical conditions. However, most evidence supporting the use of general "proprietary blends" of amino acids and proteins for hair loss is indirect or based on extrapolation from the known biology of hair. Large, high-quality randomized controlled trials specifically evaluating these blends are lacking. Thus, while there is a biological rationale and some preliminary data, the overall scientific evidence supporting the effectiveness of proprietary amino acid/protein blends for treating hair loss or thinning in the general population remains weak. More rigorous research is needed to establish clear benefits, appropriate dosing, and target populations.
