Reishi mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine, where it is prized as a general tonic for longevity and vitality. While reishi is not specifically cited in ancient texts as a remedy for gray hair, traditional beliefs often connect it with slowing aging and preserving youthful appearance, which can include claims related to hair graying. The underlying traditional rationale tends to be that reishi “nourishes the blood” and supports the liver and kidneys—organs that, in traditional Chinese medicine, are associated with hair health and color. However, there is little to no robust scientific evidence directly demonstrating that reishi mushroom can prevent or reverse hair graying. Studies on reishi focus primarily on its immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, but not on hair pigmentation. Some proponents speculate that its antioxidant effects might theoretically slow the oxidative stress that contributes to hair graying, but this remains unproven in clinical research. In summary, reishi’s reputation for supporting hair color is rooted more in traditional concepts of health and aging rather than validated scientific findings.
