For the health condition: Hair (graying)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Fo-Ti (Polygonum multiflorum, also known as He Shou Wu) has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for supporting hair health and preventing or reversing hair graying. According to TCM, Fo-Ti is believed to nourish the liver and kidney, organs thought to be crucial for maintaining hair color and vitality. Historical texts and anecdotal reports frequently mention its use for premature graying and hair loss, and the herb is still commonly found in traditional formulas for these purposes.
From a scientific perspective, there is little robust clinical evidence to support the claim that Fo-Ti can prevent or reverse hair graying. Most available data consist of animal studies, case reports, or in vitro research. Some limited animal studies suggest that Fo-Ti might have antioxidant properties or effects on melanogenesis (the process that gives hair its color), but these findings have not been convincingly translated to human clinical outcomes. In summary, while Fo-Ti's use for graying hair is deeply rooted in tradition, strong scientific validation is lacking, and its efficacy for this purpose remains unproven in human studies.
