Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

English Walnut (Juglans regia) has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in regions like the Middle East, Central Asia, and parts of Europe. In these traditions, walnut leaves and husks have been used as natural hair dyes due to their staining properties, and sometimes as tonics believed to benefit hair health. The idea that English Walnut can prevent or reverse graying hair is mostly based on these traditional uses, where plant-based remedies were sought for various age-related changes, including hair graying.

Scientifically, there is little robust evidence to support the notion that English Walnut or its extracts can prevent or treat graying of hair. Graying is primarily determined by genetic and age-related decline in melanin production within hair follicles. While walnuts are a source of nutrients like copper, which is involved in melanin synthesis, there is no direct research showing that consumption or topical application of English Walnut meaningfully affects hair pigmentation in humans. Most modern uses of walnut for hair focus on its coloring properties as a natural dye, not on biological reversal of gray hair. Therefore, its use for graying hair is best characterized as traditional, with minimal scientific backing.
