Vitamin D’s role in hair care, particularly for hair growth and overall hair health, is supported by emerging but limited scientific evidence. Vitamin D is believed to play a role in the hair growth cycle, particularly in the anagen (growth) phase. Research has shown that vitamin D receptors are present in hair follicles, and animal studies have demonstrated that the absence of these receptors can lead to hair loss. In humans, several studies have noted that individuals with certain types of hair loss, such as telogen effluvium and alopecia areata, often have lower serum levels of vitamin D compared to healthy controls.

Despite these associations, direct evidence that vitamin D supplementation can restore hair growth in individuals without a deficiency is lacking. Most clinical studies are observational and do not establish a cause-and-effect relationship. Supplementation may be beneficial in people who are vitamin D deficient, but robust randomized controlled trials supporting its efficacy for general hair care or hair loss prevention in those with normal levels are limited. Overall, while there is scientific rationale and some preliminary evidence linking vitamin D to hair health, the strength of the evidence is relatively weak, and more research is needed to clarify its role.
